Dance: Cougars earn three top-five finishes at Category Championships

The Canby dance team twisted and twirled its way to three top-five finishes Dec. 1 at the 2012 Category Championships at Tualatin High School. More than 30 schools participated in the event, which featured more than 70 routines.

AURORA — North Marion girls basketball coach Dennis Melcher said pressure defense will be the key to North Marion’s success this year. Against Roosevelt on Friday the team turned his philosophy into execution and came away with a 59-42 victory to improve to 1-2 on the year.



Swimming: North Marion records 14 top-five finishes in season opener

The North Marion swimming team took third place on the boys side and fourth on the girls side in its season opener Dec. 7 at St. Helens Pool. The boys were led by Noah Norris, who won the 100-yard freestyle and 100 backstroke races.



Swimming: Canby splits dual meet with Oregon City

The Canby swimming team earned an 84-66 victory on the girls side but lost 95-75 on the boys side in its Dec. 6 dual meet with Oregon City at the Canby Swim Center.

Aided by two individual championships, the Canby wrestling team finished in second place at its home tournament Dec. 15. Rawley Warren and Alejandro Sandoval each won their brackets at the Larry Owings Invitational, which drew competition from Centennial, David Douglas, McMinnville, Roseburg, Sprague, Sunset and Tigard.

2012 boys fall athlete of the year: Mike Caruso
