Youth basketball: Canby's 5th-grade girls traveling team wins Sisters tournament

The 5th-grade Canby girls traveling basketball team won a tournament Jan. 19-20 in Sisters.The team went 4-0 during the two-day event, defeating Sisters, Bend, Summit and Burns.



Youth swimming: Kennedy Hester wins two state titles at 10-and-under championships

Kennedy Hester won two state titles at the 10-and-under club swimming championships Feb. 16-17 in Springfield, Ore.The 8-year-old Canby Swim Club member took first place in the 50 backstroke race and also snagged top honors in the 50 freestyle.

For most of Rachel Erbe’s life, coaches and teammates have encouraged her to take advantage of her size. She was always one of the tallest girls in her age group, and now she’s a 6-foot-1 forward on the Canby girls basketball team.



Wrestling: Chickenpox abruptly ends Canby senior Keith Nichols' prep career

OREGON CITY — The most unusual of opponents has prevented Keith Nichols from contending for a state championship: chickenpox. Three days before the regional tournament, the standout Canby wrestler discovered he might have the viral infection after teammates noticed rash marks on his back at practice.

The end of Carrie Kralovec’s standout campaign was bittersweet. After missing out on the Class 6A state championships in two individual events last year, the Canby senior not only advanced to the OSAA meet this season but also reached the finals in both of her events.

GRESHAM — Noah Norris flexed his muscles, kissed his biceps. He struck the archer’s pose made famous by Jamaican track star Usain Bolt. The North Marion freshman certainly appeared at ease as he stood on the podium, where he posed for photographs after the small-school state swimming championships.



Wrestling: North Marion receives seven bids to Class 4A state championships

The North Marion wrestling team qualified seven wrestlers for the state championships at its regional tournament Feb. 16 in Scappoose. Lucas Randall, Keltin Boykin and Brennan Patterson each snagged a regional title, leading the Huskies to fourth place overall with 137.

Prep athletics: Latest OSAA proposal alters conferences for Canby, North Marion

The latest OSAA proposal for the four-year time block beginning in 2014-15 includes tweaks to the leagues of area schools. In the recently released draft, Canby is part of an expanded, nine-team Three Rivers League that adds Sherwood, Tigard, Tualatin.

PORTLAND — No one had to ask Lucas Randall what he meant when he extended four fingers on each hand Saturday night, arms raised in victory. The senior had just reached the uppermost echelon of Oregon high school wrestling history, becoming the 26th athlete to win four state titles and the first from North Marion to accomplish the feat.

The Canby junior felt it was his duty to give nothing less than his best in his final match at the Class 6A state championships, especially because senior teammate Keith Nichols couldn’t compete after coming down with chickenpox just days before the regional tournament.
