National Night Out returns to Canby tonight from 6 to 9 p.m.

The Canby Police Department encourages neighborhoods throughout Canby to join forces with thousands of communities nationwide for the 26th annual National Night Out Crime/Drug Prevention Event.
Neighbors are encouraged to lock their doors, turn on their porch lights and spend the evening outside with neighbors.

“For us in Canby, it’s kind of an outreach for the police department to get together with citizens,” said Canby Police Sgt. Scott Cunningham. “We provide crime prevention information and offer awareness issues and work to develop neighborhood spirit and getting those partnerships between the citizens and police developed.”

> National Night Out is a way to build neighborhood unity and strengthen police-community partnerships.
The Canby Police, Canby Fire Department and Greenbriar Apartments (with special assistance from local businesses and volunteers) are planning two citywide events tonight at Wait Park and Locust Street Park beginning at 6 p.m.

“It does open up lines of communication and give people a chance to ask us questions,” said Cunningham.

All available Canby Police Department officers will be out and about during the event.
The events will feature free treats, games and prizes for the kids, along with crime prevention literature and chat groups with officials from the police, fire and sheriff's departments.

“Hopefully, with the availability of resources we’ll have, we’ll get some good things going out there,” said Cunningham.
