Gathering crowd
Moments before the official ribbon-cutting at the Canby Cinema 8, the crowd gets into position.
A single beam of light shot through the Friday night sky, indicating that a dream had, after three-and-a-half years, become reality in Canby.
City staff, council members, businesspeople and more than a few curious onlookers gathered outside Canby’s newest addition to the downtown area – Canby Cinema 8 – to usher in the theater’s maiden weekend.
The spotlight that targeted the night’s sky around the theater offered a punctuation to a project that had been planted as a seed of a wild idea, germinated with hard work and timely donations, gotten its roots in the ground thanks to the city’s urban renewal agency, then began to sprout when Chuck Nakvasil decided he’d put a theater in Canby’s downtown core area.
Nakvasil expressed his gratitude to the city for working so closely and easily with him in developing the project during the official ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday evening. He lauded the community-wide effort that brought he and one of his theaters to the community and he reinforced his intention to create a community-oriented eight-plex in Canby.
Canby Mayor Melody Thompson echoed Nakvasil’s comments about the good working relationship the project engendered and thanked a litany of people who had built into the project themselves.
In the end, when the line of speakers had delivered their thoughts and the neon lights sparkled against a cooling October sky, a large delegation cut through a bright blue ribbon, courtesy of the Canby Area Chamber of Commerce, and pronounced Canby Cinema 8 open for business.

I have seen a movie there and it was a wonderful experience. This is a great addition to downtown and thanks to everyone involved in making it happen!
