Canby's forwards (in yellow) work the ball to find an opening.
Though it controlled the action for most of the game, the Canby High boys soccer team opened its 2009 campaign with a 0-0 tie against Southridge Thursday at home.

The Cougars controlled the ball in Southridge’s end for most of the first half, missing several solid scoring chances along the way, according to coach Scott Burkhart.

“I thought both teams looked a little sluggish and slow,” said Burkhart. “We looked a little nervous. We probably controlled the entire first half and 75 percent of the game.”

The Skyhawks had their best opportunities immediately after halftime. They came out aggressively and attacked Canby’s defense somewhat successfully to open the second period.

“TheGot a News Tip?y came out flying at us and created a couple of chances,” said Burkhart. “They had a couple that went off the crossbar.”

While the Cougar defense stiffened and held Southridge at bay, the offense was struggling to get untracked. Taylor VanAmburgh, Parker Forrest, Eddie Sanchez and Saul Casarez took turns creating chances, but simply couldn’t finish.

“I felt we were getting in behind their defense all day and just didn’t finish,” said Burkhart. “We probably missed 10 scoring chances throughout the game. I think we were a little nervous and just need to settle down.
“They (Southridge) were kind of compacting the middle so we needed to attack the flanks a little more,” he added. “On the whole, our midfield had a pretty good game, our forwards just didn’t finish.”

Burkhart said that despite garnering a tie in a game he felt his team should have won, the goal of going 4-0 to start the season remains intact. And, he added, with the first game jitters hopefully out of the way, the offense should be able to start gearing up.”

“We just need to be a little quicker to shoot,” he said. “We were looking for the perfect shot too often. I think we’ll get untracked.”
