The North Marion girls soccer team dropped a 4-1 decision to Gladstone Tuesday, Sept. 15, after grabbing a 1-0 lead early on.
Briana Martinez rifled a blast from nearly 50 yards out that scampered past the Gladiator’s keeper just two minutes into the match.
“Gladstone’s goal kick bounced toward midfield and Briana pushed up and knocked the ball off a half-volley,” said coach Grant Hartenstein. “The ball bounced on the 6-yard line right over the keeper. It was Briana’s first goal of the season and an incredible shot.”
A tough bounce produced Gladstone’s tying goal, as the ball rolled through Husky keeper Jenaya Surcamp’s legs.
Gladstone scored again right before the half to take a 2
-1 lead at the half, then added two more in the second half to secure the win.
“I thought Jenaya showed maturity by not letting a miscue off the first goal get her down,” said Hartenstein. “She did a good job of positioning herself against the Gladstone attack and recorded 11 saves.”
Injuries forced the Huskies to shuffle its defense around and that caused periods where the defensive group was completely unfamiliar with each other.
“That’s not ideal, but I’m proud of their effort and williningness to fill in as needed,” said Hartenstein.
Last Thursday, North Marion fell to 0-2 in Capital Conference play with a 1-0 defeat to La Salle on the road.
Huskies’ cross country team competes at Silver Falls Oktoberfest:
Hannah Johnson was North Marion’s top varsity finisher Wednesday, Sept. 16 during the Silver Falls Oktoberfest Invitational at Silver Falls State Park.
Johnson ran the 5,200 meter course, which includes a huge hill dubbed "the monster," in a time of 28 minutes, 20 seconds. That was good enough for 21st place.
Molly Gunther was the next fastest Husky with a time of 30:45, good enough for 49th place.
On the boys side, James Boyer was the top finisher, placing 23rd in a time of 22:59.
He was followed by Jake Boudreaux in 79th place (24:51), Alex Packham in 85th (25:06), Devin Feldman in 104th (26:01) and Sam Kimber in 108th (26:10).
The Huskies will hold its own invitational Thursday at 4 p.m. at Willamette Mission State Park.
On Saturday, Sept. 12, the Huskies took on the Trask Mountain Assault course near McMinnville at the 5Rock Ranch.
In all, 35 schools participated in this year’s race.
Boyer again led the way, finishing 32nd in 22:51. Packham was the second Husky boy to finish, coming across the finish line in 94th place (27:07). Boudreaux (171st, 35:02), Feldman (172nd, 35:02), Spencer Keeton (173rd, 35:03) and Kimber (174th, 35:03) rounded out the group.
