CARUS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Sixth-graders from Matt Salisbury’s class practice their song, “School’s a Jungle” for their upcoming performance
Carus Elementary School students have been singing the blues all month, ever since Grammy nominated blues artist Ellen Whyte has been at the school as artist in residence.
Whyte worked with all of the students in the school, teaching them how to sing blues music as well as how to write it. Each class composed its own blues song and learned the history of the blues.
“The kids did all the work,” Whyte said. “They came up with the lyrics, and I wrote the music.”
The students performed with Whyte and her band Friday at the Richard R. Brown Fine Arts Center. Due to space limitations, only Carus families were able to attend the event.
