RUNNING FOR OFFICE --
Canby Mayor Melody Thompson has filed to run for the office of county clerk.
Canby mayor Melody Thompson announced Thursday that she has filed to run for Clackamas County Clerk.

Thompson, who has managed several city government offices in records management, elections, budget and customer service for more than 17 years, said she brings a unique blend of skills and experience to the elected County Clerk position. She is also currently in her seventh year as the mayor of Canby.

“In any economy, but particularly in today’s environment, each level of government should strive to provide excellent, cost-effective and accountable services to the citizens,” said Thompson. “I believe a fresh perspective of proven leadership is critical to take the County Clerk’s office to that next level.”

Drawing on experience overseeing Canby’s $28 million budget, as well as numerous city pGot a News Tip?ublic budget cycles in her professional career, Thompson proposes using technology and Web site innovations to deliver a higher quality of services.

“These are just a few of many approaches to maximize taxpayer resources and provide improved responsiveness to citizens. They also will help businesses to improve their bottom line. All are a win-win for Clackamas County,” Thompson said.

Thompson said she has been meeting with citizens, business leaders and elected officials throughout Clackamas County to gain their insight and refine ideas to improve the County Clerk’s office. In the process, Thompson has gained support for her candidacy countywide.

"Melody will bring the high level of competence and responsiveness to the County Clerk position that the citizens of Clackamas County deserve and that has been lacking for many years,” said Sandy Mayor Linda Malone.

“I support Melody Thompson as County Clerk because of her years of experience in the field.  We need her skills and leadership to manage this important county service,” added Lynn Peterson, Clackamas County Chairwoman.

Thompson and her husband Thomas have lived in Canby for 21 years with their two sons Tyler, 26, and Christopher, 18.

A campaign Web site will be launched soon and the committee will host a number of other campaign fundraising events, including small home gatherings and business-sponsored events in 2010.

B.D., Ms. Thompson has been an outstanding mayor and superb elected official for a long time. Do you honestly believe that your current fixation with the "Canby District" is the only issue going on? Stop being so myopic. Thank you, Mayor Thompson for your years of service to our community. As a Channel 5 viewer, I have appreciated your candor and your abilities as a leader for a long time.

Ms Thompson has had her eye on higher public office since she was elected Mayor. The Mayor's office was just a stepping stone for her. Too bad.

BD: I don't work with the mayor, nor does she know who I am. So although you may think I am being a sycophant, I'm not. Brown-nosing is ingratiating oneself for some type of gain. I had nothing to gain except calling out the previous writer for her fixation with the current drama.

And furthermore, I appreciate public officials when they work hard for the people. I know that Aurora takes a different view of appropriacy of how they treat their public officials, so I apologize for respecting and appreciating our mayor.

By the way- Canby elected people & city govt. have nothing to do with school district. It is managed and run by elected School Board members and staff. They should be the ones the community looks to for answers and responses. And people should always stay in one political office? That seems short sighted. I would say 8 years as Mayor was a good contribution. Let's be realistic.

An eight year span is considered a stepping stone? Mayor Thompson has put a lot of hard work and effort into her work as Mayor for Canby, and whether or not you agree with everything that has been accomplished during her time in office you should appreciate the fact that Canby has been lucky to have someone who genuinely cares about the town and the people in it.
